Tintin in Soviet Review

Hi All,This is an extremely biased review. Please find the same below:Pros of owning this book:1. This is not only a book, this is a treasure.2. You can show off to your friends, and they will envy your happiness.3. You can read it from time to time to forget the worries of this world.4. Yes, the binding is good and no, I do not want the pictures in colour, they are just fine, thank you.Cons:1. Your family, might think, you are going bonkers.2. Your friends, might laugh at your inner child, but who cares.3. This might set you on a dangerous road, a road which will only end, when you have collected the last of the TinTin books. So beware of that temptation.

First Tintin Book

Its fascinating to see the maturing of the drawing as the story evolves. Its kind of amateurish and the story line is quite basic but for a fan its interesting to see the evolution of the art.Good print. Very quick delivery.

Must read.

The sketches, The facts, if these are facts, about Bolsheviks are really awsome. Reading Tin Tin in my choldhood was about heroics of an urchin. At 62 it is all informations.

good quality even though black & white

its in black & white as being the 1st book 1st printed as comic in newspaper but the quality of paper is good. The font is also fine & binding is good for paperback. Yes would have loved it more if it was color.

Understand and appreciate the context

I think most reviewers here on Amazon did a good job on clarifying the context in which this work was created. A minority, however, seems to be composed of apologists for communism who don't like the true colors of bolshevism exposed.Judging this work by today's standards would be akin to criticizing Destination Moon for the way it portrays rocket ships and space travel. This is a comic strip, not a faithful representation of reality - expect exaggerations and simplifications to convey a greater point of view: that the Soviet Union's foundations were based on lies told by the communists, and that to maintain those lies a lot of work was done in the form of suppression, intimidation, misdirection and propaganda. Did Hergè perhaps go a bit too far? Yes - Tintin would've been thrown in a gulag somewhere and that would be the end of it. Not too much of a story, then. But the overall context becomes very clear once you read Solzhenitsyn's The Gulag Archipelago, which I highly recommend. If you like Tintin, this is a must-have for your collection, period. For kids, I'd suggest at least 9 or 10 y/o, preceded by some context about what communism is, as it can be quite difficult to understand the things that happen throughout the story if you're born and raised in freedom.

Good early Tintin book

Written by Herge when he was young and starting out as a cartoonist for a magazine. It's an interesting book to have in your collection from a historic and character/artwork development perspective. It's quite a long story and isn't in colour and although there are some weak points in the script it's generally an exciting and enjoyable read. Snowy has a main part and it's funny to see his continual remarks and comments to Tintin throughout. Other regular characters are not a feature of the piece. The artwork fluctuates in quality especially the Soviet characters but even at this early stage Herge was great at drawing cars, trains and planes and really captures the movement and speed of these vehicles, it's a sign of some of the types of things we see in the other books. It's an enjoyable read and I'd recommend it, it's not just for enthusiasts and collectors.
